Adopt a Family

The Yomechas Federation provides strong support for Adopt-A-Family -- a Christmas-season program that provides gifts to needy families in DuPage County. The Adopt A Family (AAF) program is a very important charitable holiday event for our Indian Guide/Princess program. This program provides an opportunity to share a valuable experience with your child while ensuring that a less fortunate family gets to experience the joy of receiving a gift during the holiday season.

The Adopt-A-Family program is operated by Lifelink Headstart. LifeLink Corporation is a non-profit, social services organization. The families that we support are from the HeadStart program and are all low-income families. For many of these families, these will be the only gifts they receive this holiday season.

Annual Target

We ask that each family enrolled in our Yomechas programs provide at least one gift to the Adopt-A-Family program. For example, a Yomechas tribe with 8 adult members (8 families) should provide at least eight gifts -- enough to "adopt" two needy families of four. (A typical gift costs about $30.00.)

Participation is Voluntary and is Not Required in any way. But, this is truly a special opportunity and we hope that all members that are in a position to participate - will do so.

How it works

In early Fall, we ask our tribes to commit to the number of gifts they are willing to provide. That information is relayed to the Adopt-A-Family organizers at Lifelink. Information sheets are returned from Lifelink to our tribes. The sheets list details about specific needy families -- number of adults, number of children, gender, ages, clothing sizes, special requests, etc.

Based on the information sheets, our tribes purchase gifts. Our tribes wrap and label the gifts (often as a tribe-meeting activity). A tribe member (often the Chief) consolidates the gifts and brings them to the designated collection site (either O'Neill Jr. High or another location) on a designated collection date (in early December).

Gift Dropoffs

The collection site will be open only during specific hours on specific dates. Gifts must be dropped off only at the designated collection site and only at an appropriate date and time.

Detailed Instructions

  1. Early in November (hopefully by the November Nation meetings), all nations will receive a package with their AAF assignments. Each nation coordinator will receive a packet of information on the families that have been assigned to their nation.
  2. Each package will have information on the families that have been assigned to each tribe within that nation.
  3. Needless to say, a family will not be assigned twice, so we need to make sure that all assignments are completed.
  4. Have your tribes / families go out and buy their gifts. Note: Some tribes have made it a tradition to go out a buy their gifts as a group. Seems to be a good way to involve your child in the process. You’ll be amazed by how they remember participating in this holiday tribe tradition years later.
  5. Use holiday wrapping for each gift and label it. Make sure the label is secure. The labels are to be printed, making sure they are large, legible, and easily located. Print the label with the family number and child number.
  6. Ideally, each tribe will assign one person to drop-off all gifts that were assigned to that tribe. All gifts for a given family should be grouped together in a large bag/bags. Each bag should be securely tied and labeled, making sure the label is secure. Bags are to be labeled showing the family number and child number.

Example:    Family #176

      Child #1
      Child #2
      Child #3

  1. Put gifts of only one family per bag. If more than one bag is needed, please label them "Bag 1 of 2" and "Bag 2 of 2" above the family number.
  2. That’s it, your good deeds are done and you are ready for the drop-off dates!
